Busójárás in Mohács – Hungary’s Wildest Folk Festival

Join ESN ELTE for one of Hungary’s most unique and unforgettable traditions: Busójárás in Mohács! On Tuesday, February 17th, we’re taking you to a full-day cultural adventure filled with masks, music, fire, dancing, and ancient traditions.

Busójárás is a UNESCO-listed folk festival where locals dressed as Busós scare away winter with loud noises, hand-carved wooden masks, bonfires, and non-stop celebration. It’s loud, crowded, chaotic – and absolutely unforgettable.

What will you experience in Mohács?

Throughout the day, you’ll be able to immerse yourself in the full Busójárás atmosphere:

• Watch Busó groups gather and parade through the city streets in their traditional costumes

• Enjoy free carnival celebrations across Mohács, with music, dancing, and spontaneous street performances

• Visit the Busó Courtyard, featuring interactive craft activities inspired by traditional and modern folk art

• Meet authentic Busó groups, including the Rodbina Busós

• Experience the dramatic bonfire lighting and symbolic coffin burning, marking the farewell of winter

• End the day at a lively South Slavic dance house with live folk music

What to bring?

• Warm clothes as the weather will be around 7°C throughout the day

• Some snacks for the bus ride

• An umbrella (for the possible rain)

• A comfortable shoe, for possible dancing and walking during the day

• Some cash as maybe some places won't accept payment by card
