Upcoming Events
Join us for a full-day hiking trip to the northern part of Hungary, where we will explore the historic castles and unique volcanic landscapes around Somoskő and Salgó and potentially discover a small Hungarian towns gems.
Our hike will take us to Somoskő Castle, located just across the Slovakian border, where we will also visit the spectacular basalt formations. From Somoskő, we will continue on foot through the surrounding forests towards Salgó Castle, another medieval castle situated on a volcanic hill with beautiful panoramic views.
The trip is designed as a full-day outdoor programme, so be prepared for several hours of walking on forest paths and hilly terrain.

Meeting point

We will travel from Budapest to Salgótarján by regional bus and continue towards Somoskő by local public transport.

06:40 – Meeting at Stadionok Bus Station
~08:20 – Arrival in Salgótarján
~09:00 – Arrival in Somoskő and beginning of the hike
Morning – Somoskő Castle & basalt formations
Afternoon – Hike through the Medves region towards Salgó Castle
Afternoon – Salgó Castle and panoramic views
Late afternoon / evening – Return to Salgótarján
Evening – Bus back to Budapest
The exact timetable may be adjusted according to public transport connections and the pace of the group.

⚠️ Important information
This is an active hiking programme, not just a sightseeing tour. We will spend several hours walking outdoors, including uphill and downhill sections and uneven forest paths.
Please check the weather forecast before the event and dress accordingly.
Somoskő Castle is located in Slovakia, while the village of Somoskő is in Hungary. The castle is accessible from the Hungarian side, and the surrounding area contains particularly interesting basalt formations.
The castle's currently published opening hours are 09:00–18:00 on weekends, with an indicated entrance fee of €2 for adults; however, these details can change, so we will check them again before the trip.
